Who is John Turville?

John Turville is an acclaimed British jazz pianist, composer, and educator. He is a prominent figure in the UK jazz and tango scenes, known for his lyrical and adventurous playing style, which incorporates classical influences.

Key aspects of his career include:

  • Performer: He leads his own trio and quintet and has released several highly regarded albums, including MidasConception, and Head First. He has performed at major venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, such as the Barbican, Ronnie Scotts, and the London Jazz Festival.
  • Collaborator: Turville has worked with many leading European jazz and tango groups, including Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio, the London Tango Orchestra, the Tony Kofi/Alan Barnes Quintet, and the Matt Ridley Quartet.
  • Composer and Arranger: He writes for and directs the E17 Large Ensemble and has received commissions for various ensembles, including a tango quintet and a jazz ensemble arranging works by composers like Schumann and Debussy.
  • Educator: He is a passionate teacher and holds positions as a Jazz Piano Tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Yehudi Menuhin School, Royal Holloway, and the Purcell School. He is also an external adjudicator for jazz piano at Trinity Laban.  He is a regular coach on masterclasses in Germany (Saarwellingen), a visiting professor at the Concertato Masterclass (Anacapri) and has been on the panel for a number of awards, including the PRS ‘Help Musicians UK’ fund and the Worshipful Company of Musicians finals.
  • Awards: His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the ‘Best Album’ in the Parliamentary Awards in 2011, the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ in the 2010 London Jazz Awards, and a PRS Promoter’s Choice Award.
