What's in the Grade 7 Pop Piano Exam?

What’s in the Grade 7 Pop Piano Exam?

The TMO Pop Piano Grade 7 Exam carries AS/A Level equivalence at RQF Level 3 and earns up to 16 UCAS points at Distinction. Five pieces are performed across the Traditional Pop/Rock list (Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Joel and more) and the 2000 Onwards list (Vanessa Carlton, Pharrell Williams, Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa and more), plus two own-choice pieces. The 25–30 minute exam window demands a programme with real variety, stamina, and artistic coherence.

Grade 7 introduces reharmonisation, ii–V–I progressions in related keys, and secondary dominants as tools for adding colour to the original song. Left-hand arpeggios now routinely cover a two-octave range, and both hands operate in octaves at moments of climax. The significant improvisation or embellishment of an entire section — an instrumental passage, a middle 8, or a complete chorus — to create a solo section is strongly encouraged and will mark out the strongest performances. Licks and techniques absorbed from admired artists can and should be incorporated as part of a growing personal vocabulary.
