About “Birjina Gaztetto Bat Zegoen”

Sting and The Angel Gabriel
There is incorrect evidence that Sting included the melody within his song Russians (itโs particularly clear at 1:25 and 3:07), however, Sting actually uses a similar melody from Prokofievโs Romance theme from his Lieutenant Kije Suite. Prokofiev, in turn, has based his melody on a Russian folk song entitled, โThe Little Grey Dove is Cooingโ.
There is a song by Sting based on this Basque melody and, unsurprisingly, itโs called โThe Angel Gabrielโ!

What have I done? Applied Monteverdi style early Baroque (from around the year 1600) ornaments to a traditional Basque folk song.
Whatโs the text? Itโs not what you and I would think! I only sing the 1st verse, but the entire song is:
โA young maiden was worshipping the Lord of Creation when an angel descended precipitously from the heavens to speak with her.
The angel entered, saying: โHail, thou who art full of grace, the Lord is with thee; thou art blessed and elect above all women.โ
Mary was troubled, and wondered why she was hearing the angel greet her in this fashion she was sore afraid.
โBe not afraid, Mary! Thou hast found grace with God; thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a Son who shall be Jesus.โ
