What’s in the Grade 8 Improvisation Exam?
The TMO Piano & Organ Improvisation Grade 8 Exam is the summit of the only Ofqual-accredited improvisation examination pathway in the UK covering piano, organ, and harpsichord. It earns up to 30 UCAS points at Distinction — the highest tariff in the suite. The Handel route at Grade 8 asks candidates to improvise a Fugue using Handel’s own fugue template as a framework. The Mozart route produces either a Sonata Form Exposition or a Theme and Variations with a minimum of two modulations. The Chopin route uses a Sentence Starter or candidate-chosen theme as the basis for a mature, varied improvisation. At least three keys, modes, or pitch centres must feature in at least one final piece.
Grade 8 is complete musical mastery — free improvisation that demonstrates total command of harmonic vocabulary, advanced textures, motivic development, and a distinctive personal voice communicated fully to the audience. The Popular and Jazz-Gospel routes offer Funk, Swung Ragtime, Latin, and Variations on any theme, with the right and left hands in an intricate, sophisticated relationship. The EDI list at Grade 8 includes Fanny Mendelssohn’s Das Jahr, Louise Farrenc’s Etudes Op. 26, Amy Beach, Mel Bonis, Teresa Carreno, Bright Sheng, Surendran Reddy, and Malaysian composer Angeline Bell — one of the most geographically and historically diverse EDI lists in any examined music syllabus in the world.
